Samsung Galaxy S II Release Date and Pricing Revealed

Samsung-Galaxy-s-II-is-the-fastest-phone-in-the-world
The release date for the UK, Germany, and the rest of Europe has been pushed to early May. For those you from the US, it’s likely it will be released on major carriers like Verizon as early as July 14. Read our full article here.

It’s still looking like it will take some time for this amazing piece of technology to hit North American shores. It’s slated for release sometime in July in Canada, and you can read more about that here.

Performance Unleashed

Read our full review on the Samsung Galaxy S II’s performance – as it’s looking like the most powerful smartphone in the world currently available.
Check out this video for an idea of what this phone is like

Samsung Executives were joking that it might actually go on sale in Canada (at least through a carrier) earlier than the US.
While initial reports back in early April indicated the Samsung Galaxy S II would be priced somewhere north of $800, it appears as though things are finally heading south towards the much more reasonable area of $600-$699. The Samsung Galaxy S II i9100 Android 2.3 Gingerbread Smartphone will be released at some point in the beginning of May 2011. The 16GB version unlocked version will be priced somewhere in the range of $599- $699 USD, while the price of 32GB variant remains unknown.

Unfortunately, the Samsung Galaxy S II is looking to be one of the most expensive smartphones on the market, but who cares? This phone is absolutely amazing and I can’t wait to get it. What we are talking about here is a phone that can take 1080p video at 30fps, has arguably the most advanced display on it, runs the fastest, and is the lightest and thinnest of any smartphone out currently. To top it off, early adopters are all over the forums saying that the battery life is fantastic. We all know this phone is packing amazing hardware, but it will have to get picked up by a carrier (like AT&T) and be priced somewhere in the $199-$249 range for it to sell like hotcakes.

We’ve also compared the Motorola Atrix and the Samsung Galaxy S2 here
Also, it appears that the radio inside the Samsung Galaxy S2 will enable it to properly function on AT&T’s network, so it’s likely it will be offered their soon, and thankfully, probably subsidized by a healthy amount. In Canada, it will function on Rogers, Bell, and Telus’ HSPA+ networks, and be able to receive healthy download/upload speeds. No word yet on whether it will function on T-Mobile, but we will keep you posted as soon as we know.

What do you think – the Samsung Galaxy S2 or the Motorola Atrix?
For an extra bonus – look how the Samsung Galaxy S II doesn’t even break a sweat under heavy browser usage, with full flash running on multiple tabs:

Anyone getting one? Think it’s better than the iPhone?

Samsung “Hawk” (Exhibit 4G) Landing In T-Mobile Territory June 8

http://cdn2.ubergizmo.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/exhibit4g.jpgJune 8 is to T-Mobile as May 26 is to Verizon. Three Android phones, one carrier, all on the same day. What was once referred to as the Samsung Hawk, now the Samsung Exhibit 4G, is set to hit T-Mo shelves on June 8, along with the HTC Sensation 4G and the Samsung Gravity Touch 2.
From what we can gather in its FCC filing, the Samsung Exhibit 4G should sport a 1GHz Hummingbird processor under the hood, with Android 2.3 Gingerbread running the show and Samsung’s TouchWiz UI on top. The smartphone will also feature a 3-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and a vga front-facing camera. T-Mobile hasn’t released its official pricing yet, but the dealer lists the Exhibit 4G, so start crossing your fingers now for something to the effect of a mail-in rebate.

LG Revolution May Join Verizon’s Xperia Play, Droid X2 in May 26 Launch

May 26 is shaping up to be a hectic day over at Verizon, as the carrier has seemingly planned a device-launch hat trick for a week from Thursday. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is already confirmed for a May 26 release, and current rumors suggest that the Motorola Droid X2 will hit shelves that day, too. Now, a leaked photo of Best Buy inventory information suggests that the retailer will receive its LG Revolution supply on May 25.
Though all three smartphones will share a birthday, the LG Revolution pretty much stands alone among the three devices, as it is the only 4G LTE-enabled device that will enjoy this Spring launch from Verizon. In terms of specs, the Revolution sports a 4.3-inch touchscreen with 480 x 800 pixels of resolution, a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, and a 5-megapixel rear camera that records in 720p.
The only real drawback to the phone is the fact that it runs Android 2.2 Froyo, instead of the much more desirable Android 2.3 Gingerbread platform. No official pricing info has made its way off the classified list, but a leaked photo of a Best Buy display reveals that the big box retailer will be charging $700 for the LG Revolution without a contract.

Intel Promises x86-based Phones In 2012

During investment presentations, Intel CEO Paul Otellini admitted that the company’s old strategy for mobile needed a makeover, but was optimistic about their prospects come 2012.
Intel is redirecting itself towards the mobile arena, and with big goals, too. Otellini said Intel’s focus would shift toward more ultra-mobile hardware like phones and tablets, and look to make them more power-efficient than any device we’re seeing in today’s market. Intel’s executive VP for mobile David Perlmutter shed some extra light on the plans, noting that future Intel-based devices will mimic many of the features seen on today’s tablets, such as instant-on, persistent Internet access, and battery life of about 10 hours. First half of 2012 was mentioned as a target for x86 handset launches, but beyond that plans were hazy.
“In two years we expect that Intel-based devices will combine the best attributes of PCs and tablets,” said Perlmutter. Not Meego devices, though, which Otellini admitted were taking a huge hit from the Microsoft-Nokia partnership. So Meego is on ice for now.
Obviously, it’ll be a while before Intel infiltrates handsets and tablets in a major way, but the company definitely has mobile in its crosshairs and now they’ve got some stated goals we can look forward to.

T-Mobile Trade-Ins: Go Green, Save Some Green

I can’t speak for everyone, but no matter how much I want to become more earth-friendly, it never really happens. It’s always too expensive, or too inconvenient, or too much work, and I blow it off. Luckily for me (and other would-be-greeners), T-Mobile is giving you a way to go green and save a little green.
If you’re with T-Mo and looking to upgrade your phone, the carrier has offered a way to trade-in your old-school flip-phone or any other throwback you have lying around for a chunk of change (to be used for a new phone, of course).
So basically, you take your old phone into a T-Mobile store, at which point a T-Mo rep will decide how much its worth, but will apparently refrain from sharing that little detail with you. Instead, you’ll get the value of your phone through a mail-in rebate and have to make another trip to the store to cash it in for a new phone.
Obviously, your pink Motorola Razr from 2006 isn’t going to pay for the HTC Sensation 4G, but at least you’ll be earning yourself a little discount, and possibly some good Karma from Mother Earth.

The Droid X2 launch saga is finally over. Verizon just made it known that the Droid X2, you know, the successor to the Droid X, will hit its online stores on May 19 for the $199 with a two-year blood oath; VZW stores will get it May 26th.
The device hits with same specs that previously leaked: 4.3-inch qHD screen, dual-core 1GHz, 8MP cam, HDMI-out, and Android 2.3. Interestingly enough, battery life wasn’t mentioned in the presser, which, as a Droid X owner, I’m very curious how the dual-core CPU will affect the life. My Droid X can make it through a solid day of use with a couple of bars to spare.

Never miss a moment using the 8-megapixel camera with continuous autofocus and stunning HD video capture. Use the new Gallery app to view, tag and post photos on sites like Flickr® and Facebook®, all from one place.
Additional features:
Powered by Android 2.2, to be updated to Android 2.3
Mirror Mode allows you to view and share your photos, videos and downloaded movies on a larger TV via HDMI output
Enterprise-ready with security and IT-grade policies, allowing you to use your DROID X2 for work and play

Mobile Hotspot capability, allowing you to share your 3G connection with up to five Wi-Fi-enabled devices
Virtual QWERTY keyboard featuring SWYPE technology for quick and easy typing of messages and emails
Pricing and availability:
The DROID X2 will be available online at www.verizonwireless.com on May 19 and in Verizon Wireless Communication Stores on May 26 for $199.99 with a new two-year customer agreement.

The iPhone 4 Tops Handset Sales Ranking In Japan

The world’s most advanced mobile nation, Japan, sees more than 100 different cell phones each year. Market research firm Gfk Japan(http://www.gfkjpn.co.jp/) [JP] has analyzed which the best-selling models in the first quarter of this year were and recently published its findings in the form of a top 10 chart.

LG’s Smartphone Boss Jumps Ship To Head Apple’s Korean Operations

For all Apple’s success across the globe, South Korea is one corner of the world that the tech giant hasn’t quite locked down. Two of Apple’s biggest mobile competitors, LG and Samsung, are both based in the peninsular nation, and each has brought to market an iPhone lookalike (if not competitor) in the form of the LG Optimus Black and the Samsung Galaxy S II.
In what looks like an effort to strengthen the company’s foothold in the increasingly tech-hungry country, Apple has hired former Vice President of LG’s Smartphone Business, Dominique Oh, as its new general manager in Korea. Oh was appointed to the position on Wednesday, according to an anonymous source, although the new Apple GM has yet to add his new title to his LinkedIn profile.
Oh used to take responsibility for LG’s Android and Windows Phone 7 product lineups, along with the establishment of relationships with global operators and future partners. Dominique Oh will replace Andrew Sedgwick, who was head of Apple’s Korean operations for more than a decade.

Apple Low-Balls 2011 Q2 iPhone 4 Shipment Volume

Last quarter, we collectively purchased 18.6 million iPhone 4s. As of right now, there are an estimated 1.5 million to 2 million iPhone 4s left out there, sitting on retailer and carrier shelves, waiting for a new owner like a puppy in a window. Maybe the rather hefty chunk of iPhone 4 inventory pushed Apple to lower its Q2 shipment volume from 20 million units to 17.5 to 18 million units, but I’m secretly hoping this figure has something to do with the launch of the next-gen iPhone, maybe as soon as September of this year if rumors prove true.

The roughly 18 million iPhone 4 units to be shipped for 2011 Q2 comprises 16 million 3G models and 1.5 to 2 million units of the CDMA version, according to Taiwan-based supply chain makers. The sources also claimed that iPhone 4S production will begin in August, with the earliest possible launch going down in September. Qualcomm will head up the 3G and CDMA chip supply.
Despite the lowered expectations for its iPhone 4, the company’s shipment plan for the iPad 2 is nothing but optimistic. Apple originally planned to ship 7 to 8 million units this quarter, but bumped that figure to 10 to 10.5 million units of the iPad 2, indicated the sources.
